About local government in NZ

The present structure of local government in New Zealand dates back to major nation-wide reforms carried out in the late 1980s. However some changes, notably in Auckland, have since been made to that structure.

As democratically elected bodies, local authorities are first and foremost accountable to their own community. Particular government agencies do, however, have some oversight responsibilities.
